The Open Water Blues Have you been in the water yet? No, I am not talking about the pool at the Y.... with warmer weather finally upon us, it's time to jump in your local lake and practice your open water swimming. Many triathletes don't spend enough time prepping for the open water swim. Although it's great to get your laps done in a pool, swimming in open water is truly a different experience. Not only does wearing a wetsuit change the body position due to increased buoyancy, but having to sight causes you to adjust every few strokes. Add in a little thing called fear, and swimming in the open water becomes really different. Many swimmers have an instinctive reaction to avoid putting their face in the water at the start of the season - the fear of drowning can be a powerful deterrant. Even seasoned triathletes can be derailed by a piece of seaweed or a rogue Northern Pike (but I don't think IL/WI lakes have sharks or piranhas, so we're safe!). If you can train your mind to calm your fears and train your body to effortlessly power through the waves, you will be rewarded with invigorating evening swims at the close of a hot day, serene sunrise swims, and a vantage point from the middle of a body of a water that you know the majority of your neighbors will never have the chance to see. How cool is that? Here are a few things you can do to succeed in open water:
| Bike EMR Special TFP wants to see its bikers be the best bikers they can be this year. Normally $150 for a 1x1 session, here is your chance for a signifcant discount.
